The Azure Window was one of the most iconic places in Malta for photographers, tourists, and locals of course. Unfortunately, the rock formation collapsed earlier this month and there is no chance of getting it back.
It was definitely a shocking moment when the iconic Azure Window collapsed on the 8th of March 2017 in the morning at around 9:40 am. What first sounded like a joke, was very soon confirmed by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat via Twitter: "Reports commissioned over the years indicated that this landmark would be hard hit by unavoidable natural corrosion. That sad day arrived."
The landmark was already shown in HBO’s Game of Thrones and many other international ad campaigns. The place now appears as if it never existed and it collapsed because of a storm, accompanied by strong waves hitting the stack of the rock formation. A profound geological study from 2013 inferred, that the formation was not in danger of collapsing and should still survive for decades. The corrosion though was unavoidable and the landmark could probably not have been saved in any way.
While this has been a sad day for Malta and people all over the world, it still shows us again, that nature often is not predictable and that we should never underestimate it.
Have you been at the Azure Window? If so, we would love to see your photo within this spot.
