Australia Marree

Maree is a small town in the middle of nowhere with the historic Marree Hotel providing the only accommodation. It is the starting point for both the Oodnadatta and Birdsville Tracks and is close to Lake Eyre. The history of the area is based largely around the old Ghan railway and, in the 19th century, the "Afghan" cameleers.

Some old buildings and vehicles in the centre of the town are great photo opportunities. A visit to the cemetery is interesting. Take water and insect repellent with you.

The only feasible way to get Maree is by driving from Adelaide. It is a long day of driving (680 km) through beautiful country. It is recommended that you take two or days so that you can enjoy the countryside and take many photos. The road is good quality bitumen until you get to Marree. Thereafter all roads are stony gravel or sandy and a four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended. Fancy-pants SUVs with low profile tyres will put you at risk of being stranded with punctures. Travel in summer is NOT recommended as temperatures in December - February can be in the high 30s with occasional extremes approaching 50 degrees. Check road conditions before travelling, dress appropriately and always carry plenty of water and some food.
