Australia Ruins of Ketchowla Homestead

The ruins of Ketchowla offer some very important South Australian history. In the 1850s, Christopher Giles, father of the famous explorers, Ernest and Alfred Giles, acquired Ketchowla Station and originally established his head station approximately 3 kilometres north of the now derelict homestead, at a place known as “The Springs”. Because of its permanent water supply, it made the perfect place to establish the homestead in an otherwise waterless landscape. Like all parts of Australia, a permanent supply of water also meant that it was an important place for the local Ngadjuri Aboriginal people.

Watch out for snakes! This image was taken on a winter's day in very flat light. Springtime on a sunny day would be best when there is some green growth. Arriving at this spot in the morning would have sunlight on the street facade of the buildingds.

Located on Ketchowla Road, this location can be accessed from the towns of Burra or Terowie. The roads are dirt and can be difficult in the wet. It is on Dare's Circuit Drive, which offers many interesting photo opportunities. Information about the drive can be found on the internet.
