The Scottish church reformer and theologian Thomas Chalmers was a central figure in the 1843 secession of the Free Church from the Presbyterian establishment. This church was named in his memory. The architect, William Henry Clayton, was employed by the Free Church in 1859 to design the building. It was opened the following year. Chalmers deconsecrated church is now home to a design company.
