The Matilda Bay Boathouse is located along Stirling Highway as you head towards Nedlands from the city center. It is one of Perth's most photographed landmarks.
Photography Tips
We used a tripod and long exposure to shoot both photos. The Moonscape was captured during the blue hour, while the Purple Sunset was taken at sunset, with the sunset sky behind the boathouse superimposed in post-processing, as it wasn’t originally in that position. For similar shots, use a neutral density filter and a tripod, and consider going at dawn when the sun sets behind the hills, casting the boathouse in shadow on bright days. Plan to spend some time there, as you might need to wait for other photographers to finish their shots.
Travel Information
There is some parking at the swan brewery or further down the road. I took a taxi out to the location from central Perth, and a bus back. It's on the main road to the University of Western Australia.
