Austria Ziessel near Gerasdorf
From May to September, there are ground squirrels to observe here. These ground squirrels are used to humans, so they are not shy. If you intend to feed the ground squirrels, it is recommended to simply take some flowers from the roadside, alternatively carrots or seeds (e.g. sunflower seeds). Please do not offer fruit, berries, baked goods or chocolate. Too high or too low water content can cause difficulties for the animal. However, I recommend bringing suitable feed with you.
There are free parking facilities directly adjacent. These belong to a public area and during July and August, when there are holidays in Austria, there is a large influx of visitors on hot days. This can lead to the parking lot being full.
Please treat the animals with respect. This species is endangered and their habitats are limited. Do not leave any garbage or piles of feed, the animals can manage ther live on their own. Keep dogs on a leash. Do not try to pet or catch the animals. The animals may approach you, but they do not want to be touched. If you want to touch them, you have to ensure that the animal comes to you and not take the initiative yourself.
PS: Even though these animals may seem tame, they are still wild animals. They bite and scratch to defend themselves.

Photography Tips
The animals come very close. Focal lengths from 7-500 mm are suitable. It's a matter of personal preference, but I find 24-70 mm to be very suitable. I recommend a low perspective, and if possible, bring a towel or a mat. If you plant larger flowers (30-50 cm high) in the ground, the animals will stand on their hind legs to reach the flowers. Oh, and there's no shade on the meadow, so drink water and remember to protect yourself from the sun.
