Austria Austrian National Library
The Austrian National Library in Vienna is the publicly accessible, central scientific library of the Republic of Austria. It is located in the Neue Burg on Heldenplatz, the historical collections and administration are accessible from neighboring Josefsplatz. Other departments are located in other parts of the Hofburg and in the Palais Mollard-Clary on Herrengasse. The competent supervisory authority of the Austrian National Library is the Federal Chancellery.
As a national library, it collects, among other things, the obligatory copies of all printed matter published or produced in Austria. These include all dissertations approved by Austrian universities. Since July 2000, the collection of legal deposits has been extended to electronic media. With the ANNO project, historical newspapers and magazines are also being scanned and made available online.
In the Austrian Empire, from 1867 in Austria-Hungary, the library was one of the most extensive universal libraries in the world as the Vienna Court Library until the end of the First World War. Today the focus of the collection is on the humanities.
As a federal museum, the Austrian National Library also has five special offerings: the State Hall, the Papyrus Museum, the Globe Museum, the Esperanto Museum and the Literature Museum of the Austrian National Library in the listed former k.k. Hofkammerarchiv at Johannesgasse 6 in the 1st district of Vienna.
