Austria Hallstatt - Classic View

You can't fail to take a great picture at this iconic photo spot in Hallstatt, Austria. The place itself is quite a tourist but it's still worth it to enjoy this beautiful view of the village, especially early in the morning when there are fewer people. The church and the reflections of the village in front of the huge mountain area are perfect themes for any travel and landscape photographer.
There is a Mountain with a nice Viewpoint there, a Saltmine you can visit and of course, you can take boat trips on the lake.

Photography Tips

Since the village is very small you need to walk the small streets located next to the lake. There are a lot of nice views along the way but you get only two positions where you can catch the "valleys peak" that reach into the lake.

The first is really at the beginning of the valley where the tourist center is. You can't miss it since this is the main view.

The second is the one I used for that shot. I marked the exact spot so you see you need to walk through the village till you come to a large bend that gives you a clear view of the scenery. You don't even need to (in fact you can't) leave the street and can shoot right away.

For sunrise, come in time. It's beautiful during the blue hour before the sunrise and you can 'fix a spot' before you're overwhelmed with other photographers. This way you can also have different moods from the same location.
A small ferry goes back and forth to the other side, which can be a nice addition to your picture.

Be respectful of the neighbors... People live there and people like a good sleep...

Travel Information

When you are coming from the south, it's probably a good idea to leave your car outside the village and use it on the map marked parking place. It's a little bit outside the center of Hallstatt, but it's only about 10 minutes to walk to the spot. This one is especially recommended if you want to photograph the city during the day or sunset because that's usually the time when there are quite a lot of tourists.

Thank you so much for your post, Klemens! your photo is marvelous and I am wondering, is it possible on the same road to continue further away and take the shot with a zoom lens? is it safe to walk on the road at the dark hours of the morning?
