The Fort de la Chartreuse, which dominates the Amercœur neighbourhood of Liège in Belgium, was built between 1817 and 1823 to defend the city.
The fort is built on a strategic height that dominates the valley of the Meuse, which had been occupied by a Carthusian (Ordre des Chartreux) monastery until the French Revolution. The fort was built by the Dutch, who at the time administered southern Belgium.

The fort was abandoned as a fortification by the military in 1891 and was thereafter used as a barracks. From 1914 to 1918 the Germans used it as a prison, and again from 1940 to 1944. In 1944-1945 it was used by the Americans as a military hospital. The Belgian army left the site in 1988.

Andre, I will be in Liege in March. I am fascinated by this place but am wondering if it is safe to explore by myself.

Hey Rob, I would strongly advise against going there all by yourself. The place is 'home' to 'homeless' and while most of the people there have no bad intentions, the looks of photo-gear might just be too tempting. Moreover, some buildings are outright in ruins, so accidents might happen - better to not be alone.... When are you planning to go? I might be able to join you for a couple more shots of that amazing place... ?

Thanks, Andre. I changed my plans and will only have a few hours in Liege. I am an architect and a big fan of Calatrava so I will probably just hang at the train station. I have some meetings in Wurzburg, Germany, and have planned a few days in Belgium before I need to be in Germany. I plan to spend a day in Brussels, 1 day in Dinant (I am a fan of Leffe beer) 1 day in Bruges, and 2 days in Antwerp. Then I take the train to Liege and Frankfurt to meet my team.
