Belgium The Lovie Castle

In 1856, Lovie Castle was built as a summer residence by Julius Karolus Cornelius Van Merris and his mother. Julius was an alderman of Poperinge and a liberal member of parliament. During World War I, the castle was inhabited by the count's family de Brouchoven de Bergeyck and was also the headquarters of French and English army corps.

In 1929, the province of West Flanders became the owner of the castle, and it was converted into a sanatorium for the treatment of tuberculosis.

Since 1960, it has served as a centre for the mentally handicapped.
