Belgium de Coninck de Merkem Castle
Around 1130, there was already a first castle on the site of the current one. The castle developed into the headquarters of the Merkem seigniory.
In 1381, the castle was rebuilt after it had been destroyed by a fire. In 1566, it was completely destroyed again during the religious disputes.
The seigniory and the castle came into the hands of the Van Outryve family in 1764. The daughter of this new owner married knight Patrice de Coninck. After his death, in 1815, the castle came into the hands of the de Coninck family.
At the end of October 1914, the German troops set up an observation post in the castle's garden. As a result, the garden and the castle were the target of shelling, so that by the end of the First World War everything was completely destroyed.
In 1923, the reconstruction of the current castle started, and the park was also restored.
