Belgium Cleydael Castle
The oldest parts of the building probably date from around 1350.
In 1518, knight Pieter van der Straeten had the dilapidated castle restored. In 1537, it was bought by Antonio del Rio. After the arrival of Alva in the Netherlands, this Del Rio was appointed treasurer of the seizure treasury. The way he fulfilled his office aroused the anger of the people. The castle was plundered and looted, after which Del Rio was forced to flee to Spain.
The ruined castle served as a shelter for the homeless until 1592. From 1615 onwards, the castle was restored by the new owner. During the period that followed the castle knew many different owners and occupants.
After the First World War, the Antwerp shipowner Christiaan Sheid bought the old knight's estate. He had it renovated in the 1950s and his widow lived there until her death.
As of 2001, Cleydael Castle is again being used as a residence.
In 1977, the castle and its surroundings were protected.
