Belgium Averbode Abbey
Since the foundation of Averbode Abbey in 1134, the courtyard has undergone several transformations.
In 2012, a water square was created in the courtyard. The 800 m² 'water surface' reflects the surrounding historical façades and influences the microclimate in a positive way.
The view of the entire width of the Abbots' Quarter is enhanced by the glistening reflection of this façade on a film of water several centimetres deep. The rainwater from the square feeds the water surface
The square was given the name Agora Reflexis. "Agora" is the Latin name for square. "Reflexis' makes the connection with reflection, but also with a reflection. In this way, the symbolism of the abbey is emphasised: it is a place where you come to think about things.
