The name Hovorst was already known in the 14th century, as a certain Arnoldus de Hoevorst had a domain in fief from the Duke of Brabant. It was a farm with land.
The year in which a castle was erected remains unclear. Some sources mention 1400 or thereabouts. In 1414, the estate was owned by Claus van de Werve the Elder.

The descendants of the builder held Hovorst in their possession until 1651. War debts forced the then possessor to relinquish his property. In 1802, Hovorst was bought by P.J. de Bruyn, who rebuilt the castle in the Empire style.
Eventually, when the castle was sold in 1875, Augustinus van de Werve reacquired the old family property. He had Hovorst partially demolished. Under his impulsion, the castle was given a Flemish Renaissance makeover in 1913 - 1914, and was given its current appearance.
