Belgium Gevers Castle
Gevers Castle, also called Wouwendonk Castle, was built in 1846 by Jan Balthazar De Haen as a "maison de campagne". The castle changed hands several times until it was bought in 1865 by Eugène Gevers, a sugar refiner in Antwerp. Since then, the family name has remained linked to the building.
After the First World War, the castle was rented out for a few years.
In 1924, the building was bought by the Duffel convent, which redecorated it as a hospital for psychiatric patients and expanded it in 1932 with a side wing for its new function as a nursing school.
In 1981, Gevers Castle was restored and renovated. After that, it was set up as a municipal nursing museum.
