Belgium Jerusalem Chapel, Bruges
The Jerusalem Chapel (Jeruzalem Kerk) in Bruges, Belgium, is a 15th-c church built by the Genoese Adornes family and consecrated in 1429. Inspired by Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre, it features a unique two-level design. The lower level holds family tombs, including Anselm Adornes' black marble tomb, while the upper level has a striking altarpiece with skull motifs and a replica of Christ’s tomb in a dark crypt. Part of the privately owned Adornes Estate, the chapel is accompanied by alms-houses and a mansion. Visitors can explore the chapel, a museum, and the Scottish Lounge, where tea and shortbread are served. It remains one of Belgium’s few privately owned churches, offering insight into Bruges' medieval merchant life.
