Cambodia Terrace of the Elephants

This terrace is to the north of Angkor Thom and is famous for the carvings of elephants on its eastern face. You can ascend to the top of it in some places. The 350m-long Terrace of Elephants was used as a giant reviewing stand for public ceremonies.

Photography Tips

As it faces east, you will probably want to capture this in the morning. Early morning particularly bathes the stone in a warm glow. The detailing of the carved rock lend themselves well to black and white compositions as well as colour. There are many, many such elephants to choose from, some of which also depict herds of elephants with baby elephants also. Some pillars of the terrace are carved to form elephant heads with the trunks pointing downwards. There's a lot of composition and texture to experiment with here.
