Canada Yellowhead Highway
The drive up the Icefields Parkway (93) in Canada is among the most scenic drives on earth. At it’s northern end, it meets the Yellowhead Highway (16) which continues to guide you through beautiful mountain scenery. Along the way, keep an eye out for wildlife including grizzly bear, black bear, elk (wapiti), bighorn sheep, and mountain goats. On our last visit we encountered elk, bighorn sheep and mountain goats all within a couple of miles of each other. As the highway basically parallels the Athabasca River for many miles/kilometers the photo opportunities are endless.
Photography Tips
These animals were just off the road. We spotted them only after traffic came to a complete halt due to people stopping their vehicles in the middle of the road to take photos. I only took this photo because I was unable to proceed. Be mindful of others and only stop if you’re able to safely pull completely off the highway.
