If you drive out of Jasper to the East you will pass a damn that separates Talbot Lake and Jasper Lake. Park your car on one of the roadside turnouts and find Jasper Lake to the left. This Lake is formed by the Athabasca River and has usually very low water levels so exploring the area is easy. To be safe bring rubber boots. This spot might be cool during the day as well, but I like it better at night when the aurora borealis dances over the lake (make sure the aurora is visible that night, check for cloud cover and auroral activity, www.spaceweatherlive.com). On the shores of the lake, you will find rocks and driftwood to implement into your composition.
Aurora will be visible here with an observed KP-index of ca. 4-5. (the following data should be shown on space weather live. Windspeed >450, Density ca. 5-10, Bz <-5, Bt >5)
The aurora will be visible at any spot in Jasper with a good open view to the north.

Photography Tips

Bring a very sturdy tripod (it is usually super windy here) and a fast wide-angle lens. For the NL focus on a bright star using the 100% view in LiveView and ensure it is a pinpoint, then you have achieved focus at infinity. be careful here when changing lenses, the wind blows around a lot of dust. Shoot at ISO1600 or higher and check your histogram so that you don't cut off the darks.

Travel Information

Ca. 20km outside of Jasper towards Edmonton on Highway 16. Roadside turnouts are available. Bring Bear-Spray and do not go alone, a lot of wildlife in the area.
