Emerald Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in Yoho National Park. Especially the very clear water offers a perfect theme for photography. This spot is one of my favourite ones at this lake because you won't only capture the lake itself, but you might also have some nice foreground elements with the canoes, which obviously depends on how many people are using them at the moment. A rainy day is therefore maybe even a good choice to visit this place.

Photography Tips

Use a Polarizer. It makes such a huge difference, especially combined with an ND filter, so that all the small waves from the water get removed and you can see beyond the surface.

An additional shot with a shorter exposure time for the canoes may be required since the white buckets are moving quite a lot and you might want to capture them without motion blur too.

Travel Information

There is a big parking place just nearby and the spot is right at the beginning of the Emerald Lake Trail on the left side of the bridge. Standing on the bridge itself is forbidden, although most tourists don't care about the huge signs.

I would also recommend turning about 100 degree right from the canoe spot. This opens a different much less photographed more unique opportunity. I just added a photo of that :-)

In cloudy weather those boats really are a great colourful addition to a photo. I loved Emerald Lake (Yoho National Park) as well. I will add a shot taken from almost the same spot.

Oh damn it, it's not Banff National Park but Yoho, you are right. I fixed it immediately and I am curious about your photo dear Adelheid. It was raining quite a lot at this day, but due to the ND filter you can't even see the raindrops. The mood was crazy awesome though, because there were only a few tourists and everything looked so calm and natural.

I think you made great use of those canoes, giving depth to the photo! I was there on a clear day, but if I ever return, I would want to take some shots at sunrise, from a spot further along the side of the lake. There are just so many awesome spots in the Canadian Rockies. I enjoy seeing your uploads.
