China Guge, the ancient kingdom

We're approaching the ancient kingdom of Guge (11th-17th century). It is located in the present-day Chinese administrative district of Ngari in the Tibet Autonomous Region and is one of the most sparsely populated regions of Tibet with about 0.4 inhabitants per square kilometer.
Here was (most likely) also the powerful Tibetan power center of the Shangshung Empire - the origin of the Bon religion.

Photography Tips

For a visit, you should definitely deal with the history and culture of the Tibetans beforehand - the photos will then come as if by themselves...

Travel Information

There are plenty of parking spaces here ( ;-) ), even arriving with (off-road) vehicles is possible - however, not only the enormous altitude (~ 15,000 ft above sea level) requires a long and strong endurance...

I guess you need special permission to visit this region of China. Can you go alone or do you need to be accompanied by a Chinese guide?

yes, you're right. Traveling in Tibet (and probably other "by China collected areas" ) is highly regulated. The possibilities and conditions often change at very short notice and vary from region to region. Without an "liason officer" it will probably not work - I recommend a travel organization company with good local contacts (= long business connections).
