China Jiaohe Ruins, Turfan

The ancient city of Jiaohe once lay on a key flow of the Silk Route but now lies in ruins. The ruins sit outside the city of Turfan in the Xianjiang province in China. Jiaohe is a UNESCO Silk route site.

Most shots of Jiaohe are taken in summer but also consider braving winter for dramatic, fractal snow-scapes. The heat of the summer can be oppressive. Winter also offers less visitors. Temperatures are sub freezing in winter (-25º to -40ºC!!). Keeping your camera warm and dry is essential to prevent damage and seizure. A camera 'raincoat' is a good idea to protect against snow.

Hire a driver/guide out of Turfan. Fly into Urumqi from any major Chinese airport. Parking is available.
