China Tian Shan ( 天池 ), the Heavenly Lake, Xinjiang
Tian Shan is a vast lake that sits at around 2000m above sea level in the north west corner of China in Xinjiang. Dramatic mountain ranges and alpine forest flank the lake in all directions. Its relative remoteness has preserved it from overdevelopment. A monastery overlooks the lake from one of the ridges.
Photography Tips
Afternoon light gives the best illumination on the lake but the sun sets quickly behind the mountains making for cold evenings in all but the summer months. If shooting in winter time, camera freezing can be an issue so it is essential to have some way to insulate your camera against the sub-zero temperatures.
Travel Information
The lake is accessible by vehicle as a day trip from the major city of Urumqii (about 40km away).
