China Bulungkol Lake, Karakoram Highway, Xinjiang

One of a series of lakes along the dramatic vistas of the Karakoram Highway route from China into Pakistan, Bulungkol Lake features a sand dune-like texture on the far side of the lake. This lake is likely to undergo heavy change in coming years as there are plans for increasing hydro electric power output from this area in cooperative plans between China and Pakistan.

The lake is best illuminated from the roadside edge perspective from afternoon onwards. Even with very wide angle lenses, it's a challenge to capture a full panoramic view of this vast, stark waterscape.

Bulungkol Lake is reached via the Karakoram Highway from the town of Kashgar en route to the popular tourist destination of Lake Karakul.
