Cayambe, one of the eight cantons of the province of Pichincha, stands out as an emblematic destination in the Andean region of Ecuador. Located just 68 kilometers north of Quito, this picturesque canton is easily accessible, being a place that fuses history, culture and nature in a unique environment.

It is not only known for its natural beauty, but also for its deep historical legacy. This canton is the birthplace of important figures in the struggle for indigenous rights in Ecuador, such as Dolores Cacuango and Tránsito Amaguaña, who founded the Federation of Indians in 1944, marking a milestone in indigenous resistance.

The Historic Center of Cayambe is an architectural treasure that is part of the Cultural Heritage of the Nation. Its streets are full of life and tradition, with a gastronomic offer that includes the famous biscuits, dairy delicacies and leaf cheeses, delicacies that reflect the rich local culinary culture.

Among its main tourist attractions are the 23 de Julio Park, the City Museum and the archaeological ruins of Puntiatzil. Founded on July 23, 1883, the city combines its vibrant urban life with a deep respect for its ancestral traditions.

Photography Tips

If you want to take pictures in the blue hour I recommend you to bring a tripod to do it, the blue hour in Cayambe does not last long because it is located in the equatorial line, that is why you only have a few minutes. If you want to photograph the church you have to look for a side spot because it is covered by trees and electric cables. For my photos I used a 50mm and a 16-35mm.

There is one direct bus departing from Quito - Terminal La Ofelia and arriving at Cayambe. Services depart every 15 minutes and operate every day and the trip takes approximately 1h 30min.
