In 1542, Jehan de Frotté, a poet at the court of Margaret of Navarre, bought the ruins of a fortified castle at Couterne, in Normandy, France. The former fortified castle belonged to the extinct family of the lords of Couterne.

The castle dates from the 16th and 18th centuries. It is built in granite and pink brick.
During the French Revolution, the castle was plundered by a crowd of peasants.
After 475 years, the castle is still inhabited by the de Frotté family.
