France The Mont-Saint-Michel
A pristine location! Get up early, it pays off (moreover you'll avoid the crowds). Beware your gear doesn't get wet with the upcoming tide!! Le Mont Saint-Michel is a small rocky island located in Normandy, France, famous for its stunning medieval abbey perched atop the mount. Surrounded by tidal waters, it becomes isolated from the mainland during high tide and accessible during low tide. The abbey, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries. The village surrounding the abbey is full of narrow streets, stone houses, and charming shops, making it a popular tourist destination. The site offers breathtaking views of the surrounding bay and is a unique blend of history, architecture, and natural beauty.
Photography Tips
I tried an image with the cracked muddy soil and common cord-grass (Spartina Anglica) as foreground interest. For distant shots of Mont Saint-Michel, use a telephoto lens to capture details without distortion. Shoot during the golden hour for soft, warm light. Include the tidal flats in your composition for added depth. Ensure the horizon is level and experiment with different angles to highlight the island’s isolation. A tripod can help with stability, especially in low light or long exposures.
Travel Information
You can park the car near the dam over the Couesnon, then you'll have to hike for about half an hour through marsh meadows. Don't forget your headtorch.
