The Saint-Jacques church in Compiegne dates back to the 12th century and has many references to its patron saint, St. James the Apostle, and the pilgrimage tradition of the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela. Its role as a royal church in the immediate vicinity of the castle led to extensive renovations in the 18th century and lavish furnishings. Since 1998, the church has been listed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Way of St. James in France".
