Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Port church, also known locally as Saint-Louis church, is a religious building constructed in Nantes in 1852 by the architects Saint-Félix Seheult and Joseph-Fleury Chenantais. It was listed as a historic monument in October 1975, and the instrumental part of its organ, built by Nantes organ builder Louis Debierre in 1891, was listed as a historic monument in December 1975.

Photography Tips

Inside the Dome of Notre-Dame de Bon-Port, focus on capturing the symmetrical beauty of the ceiling by standing directly beneath and shooting upwards with a wide-angle lens. Use a tripod or stabilization due to low light, keeping ISO low and aperture wide. Pay attention to the play of light and shadow, exposing for highlights. Highlight architectural details like carvings and stained glass with a fast prime lens. Including a person can add scale and storytelling. Shoot vertical compositions to emphasize height and always be discreet and respectful of the space. Visiting during golden hour enhances the light.

Wow! Seems the fire was the best thing to happen to it in centuries - so spectacular.

Thanks so much Edward. The restoration of the church is very beautiful.

Photographing elaborately decorated ceiling gives me a chance to study the detail when I get home. You've done this one so well. Can I ask what lens and settings you used?

I used a Canon EOS R5 with a 16mm f/2.8 Pancake RF lens. The photos were taken during the Immersia show (from 4000 ISO to 25600 ISO ; tripod and flash were forbidden and it was forbidden to move during the show). Please note, regarding our first exchange, this church was restored a few years ago, but not following a fire. It was the Nantes Cathedral (a little further into the city) that suffered a major fire and was also restored.

Ha! Thanks for the correction - possibly saves me a disappointment. I'm stunned at how good the R5 and R5 II are, even at ISOs I would never have considered with my 5D IV. Thank you for the details.

Yes, the ISO increase is fabulous on the R5. Have a great weekend and beautiful photos...
