France La Basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière, Lyon
One of the most beautiful places to visit in Lyon is located above the city with a great view from the hill down to the city: the Basilica of Notre Dame de Fourviers, an impressive building, inside and out.
When you get off the funicular and look up, you see its dazzling white façade, relatively new (1872) and dominating the Lyon skyline. Its four constellations represent the core values of justice, moderation, constancy, and prudence.
The building is an architectural curiosity as if its builder could not decide between Byzantine, Gothic, and Romanesque architecture. The result is eclectic yet charming, and there is much to see.
There are two overlapping churches. The upper chapel, is spacious and richly decorated, with many mosaics, columns, stained glass windows, and marble.
A monumental staircase leads to the lower chapel, mistakenly called a crypt which it isn't because it has windows.
