French Guiana Ile Royale, French Guyana
Île Royale (Royal Island) is the largest island of the three Îles du Salut, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of French Guyana. It is the largest island and it was used as the centre for administration, including the hospital and the death row, when the islands were used as a penal settlement.
Ruins of these buildings are still visible and prove the inhuman coditions of detention.
The islands got worldwide known by the novel "Papillon" and the movie with the same title.
