Germany View to Drachenfels from Petersberg

One of the many mountains in the Siebengebirge is the one called "Petersberg", which is near the Rhine and offers a great view over Bonn and "Drachenfels".

Photography Tips

Sunset is a great time to be here, but the sun is, unfortunately, going down on the right side of you behind Bonn. Nonetheless, this is a good time to shoot this place, especially during autumn when all trees are colourful.
Another good time to be there is during "Schlossleuchten" when they illuminate the castle in crazy colours like in films by Walt Disney. They do this usually in March when it's still dark pretty early in the evening.

Travel Information

There is free parking at the top of Petersberg, but sometimes you have to pay a small fee if you want to get up there by car.

That's great, especially because they just made some big rebuilding of this area, which made it quite hard to get a good photo from this spot within the last few months. I can also recommend you to walk up to Ölberg if you have time, since this offers a really nice view over the valley as well: https://www.locationscout.net/germany/1610-view-over-bonn-from-oelberg-siebengebirge/12595

It very much depends on your phone I guess, because you need a little bit of zoom if you want to get a similar photo like mine. Not much though, but wide angle wasn't an option for me since I didn't want to include the forest in front of me and have the focus on the castle.

Hey dear Abdulla, where are you exactly? If you switch the map to "Satellite" I marked the very exact point I was standing when I took this photo. If you found the parking of the Hotel at Petersberg, which is also marked on the map, you simple need to walk behind the hotel to the public back porch. To get to the hotel, you need to drive up a road to "Petersberg", which can be reached by driving from Königswinter to Ittenbach. The simpliest way to get there is probably by using Google Maps and entering "Petersberg". Did that help?

Yeah it's definitely so nice up there. If you are around I would recommend the view from "Ölberg" even more, since you have a wider view over the shaped mountains of the "Siebengebirge".

Hi Manuel, which focal length do you recommend for this view? I guess, at least 100mm? br Johannes
Manuel Becker Team
Manuel Becker 02.09.2018
Hey Johannes, I used 50mm on an APSC camera for the sunset photo, so if you are using a full frame camera you might probably start around 70mm. 100mm is also fine of course. The one at the event "Schlossleuchten" was taken at 75mm.

Great, my lense-portfolio ends at 85mm ;) By the way, thanks for initializing and administrating such a great website!

Hehe, 85mm is perfectly fine in my opinion. Already curious about your photos and thanks for your feedback, glad that you like the platform! :)
