In late 19th century German painter Eugen Bracht came back from a trip to Turkey with a painting showing Hannibal‘s grave. It wasn‘t long until some people realized that the background in the painting looked strikingly similar to this rock formation near Wilsede. There were rumours that Brecht had never even been in Turkey and this amazing spot got it‘s name.

Travel Information

Wilsede is in the middle of a nature reserve where there are no cars allowed. You either stay in Wilsede (spot is a short 15m walk from there) or you hire a bike and get here from Undeloh or Volkwardingen (count with an hour from either of those). Best time of the year is late August/early September when the heather is in bloom.

absolutely beautiful!! is camping allowed in the reserve?

thanks Julian, wild camping is not allowed. there is a campsite but I am not sure how far it is to this spot. you are better off staying in Wilsede. From there the spot is 15 minutes walk and you can reach another highlight (totengrund) easily from there. https://www.lueneburger-heide.de/en
