Germany Aasee Gievenbach

The lake, which lies in a south-westerly direction out of the city, has an area of 40.2 hectares and a length of about 2.3 km. It is up to two metres deep.[1] The lake is surrounded by numerous green areas and is thus the largest local recreation area in the Münster urban area.[1]

The lake dams the water of the Münstersche Aa, thus serving as flood protection and providing a supply of fresh air because the air masses flowing in mainly from the southwest are cooled. Thus it has an important ecological and urban planning function for the city. This also applies to the increasingly naturalised surroundings of the lake, which provide breeding and habitat areas for numerous species and are a popular local recreation area for Münster residents. The water level of the lake fluctuates by up to one metre.
