The old military training area is located in a very dark region on the Schwäbische Alb. There are many great photo locations, such as the nearby Turm Waldgreut. At this spot, a nice single tree offers good angles to the direction of the rising milky way center. The street points to the maximum height of the milky way bow during early rise, so you can make nice compositions.

Photography Tips

At night, you are mostly alone in this area, but there are always other photographers, some military personell and many animals! Bring everything for good panoramics and loose ground. You need a headlamp, because it is super dark. Use red light if possible, so you don't disturb other astro photographers too much. Getting a good scenery is a littlebit difficult, because you are not allowed to leave the streets.

Travel Information

You are only allowed to hike into the old training area, so no cars allowed. You can park nearby (marked on the map) and walk 10 minutes to reach the good spots.
You are not allowed to leave the streets! Better follow that rule, there can be old ammunition in the ground and the military guys don't like to see you jumping around those trees.
