The hitchhiker's gate (Anhalter Tor) of the Berlin Customs and Akzise Wall was built in 1840 and was dragged in 1868.

In the course of the construction of the new customs and acceptance wall between 1734 and 1837, the new Potsdam Gate and Hallesches Tor were built on the exit roads of Friedrichstadt. Both gates were connected on the outside and inside in a straight line with a communication path each.

In the middle of the 19th In the 19th century, Berlin was increasingly opened up by railway lines, whose head stations were mostly built in front of the customs wall. After the construction of Potsdam station in 1838 on the first Prussian railway from Berlin to Potsdam, the construction of the Anhalter Bahn began in 1839. For this purpose, the Berlin junction was the Anhalter Bahnhof to be built, which was to be set a little southeast of Potsdam station.

Entrance portal of the Anhalter Bahnhof as "Neues Anhalter Tor"

For the Anhalter Bahnhof, which is on the 1st Was put into operation in July 1841, a new city gate in the Akzisemauer was built until 1840 at the expense of the railway company. This stood about halfway between the northern Potsdam Gate and the southern Halle Gate on Communication/Hirschelstraße, today's Stresemannstraße. The square in front of the Hitchhiker's Gate is now called Ascan Square, for a long time the area was called "hitchhiker's" without further ado. With the construction of the later representative station building, Anhalter Bahnhof was for some time the largest station in Europe. 1]

Due to the rapid growth of Berlin, the Anhalter Tor did not have a long duration: As early as 1860, the Wall border was lifted and between 1867 and 1870 the Akzisemauer and with it almost all gates were demolished, including the Anhalter Tor. Instead, the monumental entrance portal of the new Anhalter Bahnhof, built from 1874 to 1880, was also often referred to as the "New Hitchhiker's Gate", which led to the square in front of the Hitchhiker's Gate.
