Germany Rotes Rathaus Underground Berlin
The Berlin office of Collignon Architektur is responsible for the design of the Rotes Rathaus underground station.
The design was inspired by the vaulted ceiling of the medieval Berlin City Hall, which was rediscovered during archaeological excavations. Seven pillars arranged in the middle bear a large part of the ceiling load. With their funnel shape, the column heads look like mushrooms and are reminiscent of the Gothic vault. Combined with the external platforms, the result is an open, spacious station hall. The underground station Rotes Rathaus is designed in black and white. Hand-polished terrazzo tiles give the underground station a simple elegance.
The Rotes Rathaus underground station has two levels. The platforms for the new U5 are located on the upper floor, while a four-track reversing and erecting system is being built on the lower one as a replacement for the Alexanderplatz reversing system.
