Germany Fehmarnsundbrücke
The Fehmarnsund Bridge connects the island of Fehmarn with the German mainland. It is approximately 1,300 m long and crosses the Fehmarnsund in the Baltic Sea. The 240 m long central section provides a 23 m high opening for shipping. The opening is supported by a 45 m high double net arch. The structure is popularly known as the "coat hanger." The bridge was built from 1960 to 1963. Even before its inauguration in April 1963, the bridge was permitted to be used in January 1963 to supply the island's residents, who were cut off from the mainland due to a harsh winter. In 1999, the structure was listed as a historical monument by the state of Schleswig-Holstein.
