Germany Horizont-Observatorium Halde Hoheward
The Horizon Observatory on the Hoheward slag heap in Herten is a 45-meter-high astronomical instrument. The work of art is a modern version of prehistoric stone circles and was erected in 2008.
From a location inside the circle, significant positions of the sun at the summer and winter solstices can be determined.
Shortly after its opening, cracks appeared in the arches. Temporary supports were installed in 2009 to secure them. As we all know, nothing lasts longer than a temporary solution, and so these pillars are now an integral part of the sculpture.
