Germany Burg Veynau
The medieval moated castle of Veynau in Euskirchen was built around 1340. During the 14th century, it changed hands several times. During the Guelderian War (1542-1543), it was successfully defended against imperial troops. However, during the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), it was severely damaged and extensively repaired between 1661 and 1663.
In 1708, it was burned down by the French General Lacroix. It was subsequently restored to its present form. In the 19th century, the castle lost its importance and was used as a country estate. In the 20th century, it stood empty for a long time and gradually fell into disrepair. In 1988, the castle was purchased and extensively restored with the support of the state. Today, it is privately owned and not open to the public.
