Germany Schloss Benrath
Benrath Palace in Düsseldorf was built between 1755 and 1771 in the late French Rococo style. It replaced an earlier moated castle, which had been converted into a moated palace around 1660. Elector Carl Theodor of the Palatinate commissioned the new building because the old palace had become dilapidated. The new complex was built about 300 meters north of its original location and designed as a pleasure palace and hunting lodge. The main building, together with the cavalier wings and the extensive park landscape, forms a harmonious work of art.
The pleasure palace combines architecture with nature. On the side facing the city is the circular palace pond, and on the south side is the 470-meter-long Spiegelweiher pond. Adjacent to this is an extensive, square-shaped palace park that extends to the Rhine in the east.
Although Carl Theodor never used the palace permanently, it is considered one of the most important examples of Rococo architecture in Europe. After various uses, including as a residence and later as a school building, Benrath Palace was restored in the 20th century. Today it houses museums and serves representative purposes.
