The Erin mine was founded in 1867 by William Thomas Mulvany. Shaft 7, sunk in 1951 and operational by 1953, served as the main production shaft. Its 68-meter-high Dörnen-type headframe became a landmark of Castrop-Rauxel and was preserved as an industrial monument after the mine's closure in 1983. From 1963, all coal production was routed through this shaft. The headframe is illuminated at night and part of a light art project that features a green laser beam connecting the Erin 3 and Erin 7 towers during Advent. Shaft 7 symbolizes the industrialization of Castrop-Rauxel.

Photography Tips

Tripod, wide angle lens, long exposure. Best ime of the year: December. The two shafts Erin 3 and Erin 7 are "connected" at night by a laser beam.
