Germany Zeche Erin, Schacht 3
The Erin mine was founded in 1867, and Shaft 3, initially planned as a ventilation shaft, began operation in 1891. It was later used for man-riding and occasionally for coal extraction. In 1929, it received its distinctive hammerhead tower, a technical monument due to its unique design. From 1937 onwards, Shaft 3 served only for ventilation and man-riding, while coal was extracted through Shaft 7. After the mine's closure in 1983, the hammerhead tower was preserved and restored in 1993. Today, it stands as an industrial monument and part of the Industrial Heritage Trail, surrounded by a Celtic tree circle honoring the Irish founder William Thomas Mulvany.
