Germany Zeche Hugo, Schacht 2
The Hugo mine began production in 1878 after exploratory drilling confirmed the presence of coal between 1870 and 1872. Shaft 2 was sunk between 1882 and 1885 and received a Tomson-Bock headframe in 1974, which is now preserved as an industrial monument. The mine's coking plant opened in 1906 but closed in 1930. After severe damage during World War II, production resumed in 1947. In the 1970s, the Ruhrkohle AG modernized the mine, equipping Shaft 2 with a steel headframe to increase capacity. Hugo merged with Consolidation in 1993 and later with Ewald. Coal production at Hugo ceased entirely in the year 2000.
