The “Dessau-Wörlitzer Gartenreich“ is a prominent cultural landscape in the German federal country of „Sachsen-Anhalt“, consisting of several buildings and landscape parks and lakes emulating British paradigms. It was founded in the second half of the 18th century by prince Leopold III. Friedrich Franz von Anhalt-Dessau, ruler of a mini-state during the era of enlightenment and among others it reflected the prince’s experiences during his educational journey to the classical places.
Nearly the whole territory of that mini-state has been transformed into a landscape garden full of water expanses, buildings, garden sculptures and bridges, all connected by a network of vistas and alleys. In contrary to the practice of baroque era the prince of Anhalt-Dessau opened his gardens to his people in order to let them participate in the morally and spiritually elevating vibrancy of this beautiful piece of nature, landscaped in the spirit of enlightenment.
The entrance to the most impressive part of the garden is at: Erdmannsdorffstraße, 06785 Oranienbaum-Wörlitz OT Wörlitz.
Nearby towns: Bauhausstadt Dessau and Lutherstadt Wittenberg.
