Germany Heilstätten Beelitz

The “Heilstätten Beelitz” near Berlin was erected between 1898 and 1930 for the therapy of pulmonary diseases like tuberculosis by Berlin workers and covers an area of about 500 acres. During the First and second World Wars, it was a military hospital and continued to be used this way by the Red Army until 1989. Since that time the buildings are deteriorating. Most of the area today is closed as a new investor has been found recently. Access, especially to the buildings, is dangerous and strictly forbidden. I met quite a lot of photographers there and I am not sure whether everybody followed the ban on entering the buildings that I did. But even from the outside through windows and doors, it still is possible to take some extraordinary photos.

Some of the buildings are dangerous and the owner has a legal duty to maintain safety. But although there are guards in most parts of the area up to April 2015 it was possible to take photos in some parts of the area. Be careful, be polite and inform yourself in advance on the Internet about the current situation.

This place can be reached by car via Highway 9 exit 2 (km 2,4) Beelitz-Heilstätten/Fichtenwalde, close to the triangle interchange Potsdam (A 10/A 9).
