Greece The port of the Greece Island Hydra
Hydra is only 2 hours by Flying Dolphin (hydrofoil) and is worth of a day trip from Piraeus. Hydra is one of the most pictoresque and beautiful island on the aegean sea, so unique that it had attracted artists as a source of inspiration. Leonard Cohen had a house here where he wrote some of his greatest songs. The entire island is car free and you will have to use your own feet or the local mules to get around. This place is a gem and a jewel and I hope to post more photos from this spot.
Photography Tips
Get to the castle of Kavos that sits above the eastern entrance of Hydra Harbor (37°21'09.3"N 23°27'59.2"E). There you will find the Hydriot and Greek flags flying above the monument to Admiral Andreas Miaoulis with the old canons pointed at sea. I used the mini iron tripod of Manfrotto which I could rest on leisurely on the fortress wall, wide and sturdy enough for my D800 :) the view from this place is stunning, you get an entire view on Hydra bay with its colored houses and a breath of fresh air with a whiff of salt and sea breeze. The walk from the bay is 2-3 minutes. Sunset is an experience by itself.
Travel Information
Merely two hours by a flying dolphin (hydrofoil) or cat (catamaran) from Piraeus. Once at the harbor the only means of transportation are your two feet or a local mule as cars and motor vehicles are not permitted by law. I could live here forever :-)
