Greece The top of mount Zas, Naxos at sunset
The rugged mount Zas is the highest on the Cycladic islands and offers a fabulous view on all the surrounding islands and a beautiful sunset. There are two trails, one "on the rocks", the other, the so called easier is partially trail dotted with cairns and partially (the last bit) which is a rocky part. The easy one wasn't that easy, but once at the summit, the view at the (at 1,004 m) was rewarding and was well worth the excruciating efforts. The feeling at the summit is a most liberating one can have. In ancient times, the local Greeks believed that the cave on the northwest flanks of the mountain was the birthplace of the god Zeus. Zeus, the god of the sky, the king of the Olympians. The "easiest" trail starts at Aghia Marina, the name of the little chapel near the start. It is a well-maintained trail which is posted with a number of signs and cairns and is easy to follow to the summit. This route is 8 kilometers round-trip.
Photography Tips
Mid-Range Zoom Lenses, filters
If you wish to photograph the sunset, take a guide from naxosdiscovery.net as you will never be able to get back in the pitch darkness without a professional guide.
I started the climb at 15:00 hours and despite the schorching sun, there is always a fantastic breeze all the way up.
