The Seljalandsfoss is a waterfall in the south of Iceland.
It is situated in the municipality of Rangárþing eystra on the ring road between Hvolsvöllur and Skógar directly at the junction of the road towards Þórsmörk. The river Seljalandsá falls 66 m over the former coastline into the flood plain of Markarfljót, into which it flows shortly afterwards. The waterfall, like many of its kind, including the also famous Skógafoss, lies below the large glacier shield Eyjafjallajökull.
You can walk behind the waterfall and see the land outside through the water curtains. A visit in the late evening hours, when the colours are most intense, is especially recommended.
If you walk west along the rock face towards Þórsmörk, you will pass numerous smaller falls, the most beautiful of which is Gljúfrabúi or Gljúfurárfoss. The first name means ravine dweller, because the waterfall is partly hidden in a semi-open cave.
