Iceland Dynjandi Waterfall from a distance
Dynjandi, often called the "Jewel of the Westfjords," is one of Iceland’s most stunning waterfalls. It cascades 100 meters down in a bridal veil shape, starting wide at the top (30 meters) and spreading out to 60 meters at the bottom. The name "Dynjandi" means "thundering," and you’ll quickly understand why when you hear its powerful roar echoing through the remote fjord landscape. For photographers, Dynjandi offers dramatic symmetry, layered rock textures, and striking contrasts between the white water and dark cliffs. The soft evening light during Iceland’s long summer nights creates magical shooting conditions, with few crowds, making it a dream spot for long-exposure shots.
Photography Tips
Photographing Dynjandi from a distance allows you to capture its full majesty and the surrounding landscape. For the best results, use a telephoto or mid-range zoom lens to compress the scene and emphasize the waterfall’s layers against the rugged cliffs. Look for elevated viewpoints or natural frames like rocks or foliage to add depth and context. Early morning or late evening light is ideal, casting soft tones and enhancing textures without harsh shadows. Polarizing filters can help cut glare and deepen sky and greenery colors. Lastly, try shooting wide landscape shots to show how the waterfall blends into the dramatic fjord scenery.
Travel Information
Dynjandi is located in Iceland’s remote Westfjords, about 380 km from Reykjavík. The best way to reach it is by car—drive north from Reykjavík, following Route 1, then branch onto Route 60 towards the Westfjords. The roads are mostly paved, but some sections can be gravel, especially as you get closer. In summer, it’s accessible by regular cars, but in winter, conditions can be challenging and sometimes impassable without a 4x4. There’s a small parking area near the base, and from there, it’s a short, easy hike (around 15 minutes) up a rocky path to the waterfall.
